Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Gujarati is related to Devanagari but written without its headstroke, so each letter stands free on the line. Until the mid-19th century the script was mostly a tool for bookkeeping and correspondence. Today about 48 million people use it, for Gujarati and Chodri, and for Bhil languages it appears alongside Devanagari.
This is the serif, modulated member of Google’s Noto collection for the script, drawn by Universal Thirst and Indian Type Foundry together with Monotype’s team. 9 weights, Thin to Black. A Latin set comes along, and so do a few characters from the Devanagari block and the common Indic number forms.
For a Gujarati book or a long newspaper feature this is the Noto we would choose, because the contrast in the strokes gives a page of running text more texture. Shaping is required here too, and contextual alternates and localized forms in the OpenType tables take care of it.
