Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Harvard University Press needed type in 2012 for its Murty Classical Library of India, and the commission went to Fiona Ross and John Hudson at Tiro Typeworks, and Tiro Bangla is the Bengali branch of what they made.
For its look they went to Kolkata. The proportions and the texture of a page come from the handset metal type of the city’s leading publishing houses before mechanical typesetting, while the construction of the letters follows the manuscript tradition. Hudson has described the research behind the whole set as a study of manuscripts and early Indian printing from the 18th and 19th centuries.
In 2019 Google Fonts asked Tiro for an extended version to release openly. More characters went in, and Neelakash Kshetrimayum adapted a new italic.
A Latin with the diacritics for transcribing Indian languages comes along, with small caps of its own, and there are 5 stylistic sets. We would give it long reading in print, a novel or an annotated edition.
