Dear Mr. Hollis, regarding your claim
IBM’s Executive typewriter face is the main source for Cutive, with some of the older Smith-Premier in it too. Vernon Adams worked from a number of classic typewriter faces and made 2 families out of them. The sister, Cutive Mono, keeps the typewriter’s fixed spacing; this one lets an m be wider than an i.
So you get the slab serifs and the blunt, office-memo feel, but words space like normal type. It is wide, though. The same words run about 29% longer in Cutive than in Georgia, so leave it generous margins or keep it to headings and short blocks.
Adams thought it could give body text some character as well as working big. We agree for a page or 2 of a story told in letters. Beyond that the slabs get tiring.
1 Regular style. The features list is longer than you would guess, with fractions, superscripts and discretionary ligatures.
