Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Lao script came down from Khmer and has been written since the 14th century. It is an abugida set left to right, and today it carries the Lao language for some 7 million people, with Isan written in it as well.
Noto Serif Lao is the modulated, serif-style Lao in Google’s Noto collection, the project that aims at every modern and ancient writing system. The Monotype design team drew it, and Latin comes along in the same files, so a Lao paragraph can quote an English name without a font switch.
9 weights run from Thin at 100 to Black at 900. For a report or a newsletter we would set the text in Regular or Medium, keep Bold and Black for headings, and save Thin for large sizes where its strokes have room to show. Like the script itself it needs software with complex text layout support to come out right.
