Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Brushed curves meeting driving serifs, that tension is most of Lora’s personality, and it comes out of calligraphy. Cyreal put it out in July 2011, with Olga Karpushina on the Latin and Alexei Vanyashin on the Cyrillic, as a text face of moderate contrast, tuned for screens but meant to hold up in print too. Its own description aims it at modern fiction and art essays.

In March 2019 it became a variable font. This download is the static set, 8 files, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold each with an italic.

The italic runs a hair narrower than the roman, so italic titles in a reading list take a little less room than you might expect.

There are 778 characters per style, with Cyrillic and Vietnamese, and the subset list adds math and symbols. Tabular figures sit beside the proportional ones, so a table of numbers inside an essay can line up in columns without a second family.

We’d set an ebook or a long essay in it at 17 or 18 px and let Semi Bold and Bold handle the headings. Ask first whether your text wants that much personality, though. A dry technical manual might not.
