Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

A capital R in an old Conner’s type foundry specimen and the slab serif Boston Breton were the loose starting points for BioRhyme. It was Aoife Mooney’s first original published typeface, though not her first type work. Before it she had been on the design team at Hoefler & Co. in New York, on faces such as Idlewild and Surveyor, and later worked with Frere-Jones Type on Mallory. She holds an MA in Typeface Design from Reading and teaches at Kent State University.
BioRhyme has 2 widths, and this is the wide one. How wide? A line of it ran about twice the length of the same words in Georgia. That makes it a face for big settings, which is what Mooney intended for both widths, large and medium sizes only.
5 weights here: Extra Light, Light, Regular, Bold and Extra Bold. There are swashes and 8 stylistic sets to dig through, plus a slashed zero and fractions.
The Extra Light at poster size is the one we would reach for first. Stretched that wide and that thin, it looks more like lettering than type.
