Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Hand production was giving way to machines when the fat face turned up in the Victorian era, a heavy, loud letter that poster headlines used to get noticed over the traditional type around them. Frida Medrano took that moment as the starting point. Kalnia keeps the high contrast and the refined terminals of the period and lets you choose how much of the fat face you want, from a fine Thin up to a Bold.
The design was built as a variable font with weight and width axes. This page offers the 7 static weights, and they set generously wide; next to Georgia, Kalnia takes up noticeably more line.
- Case sensitive forms, fractions, ordinals and superscripts come with every weight.
Kalnia arrived on Google Fonts in October 2023. In our view the lighter weights are the interesting ones, since a hairline fat face is a strange and elegant thing, and they look best big, on a poster or the cover of a menu.
