Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

The subscript letters in Tiro Telugu are large. John Hudson and Fiona Ross took their size from Telugu manuscripts, where those letters below the line were written generously, and they kept them that way to help legibility, so a dense cluster of consonants still reads.

The face began as type for the Murty Classical Library of India, a book series, and it shows its literary upbringing. The proportions come from the manuscript tradition. The contrast in the strokes and the shaping of the counters and finials owe more to metal: the Telugu types of the Swatantra Type Foundry.

Its layout rules can build arbitrary conjuncts, the rare ones along with the common, and that matters for anyone setting Sanskrit or Pali in Telugu script. When the fonts came out as a libre release, Tiro extended the character set and added an italic companion, adapted by Kaja Słojewska; Google Fonts lists the family from March 2022.

There is a Latin side too, with the diacritics needed to transliterate Indian languages, so a scholarly edition can put a romanized line next to the Telugu without switching fonts. Hidden in the features: small caps and 6 stylistic sets.

We would treat it as a book face first. A translation or a critical edition, a journal on South Indian literature, a library catalog. It was made with screens in mind as well, but the page is where it looks most at ease.
