Maitree is Thai for friendliness. Cadson Demak, the Thai foundry, paired a looped Thai with a serif Latin, both on wide proportions, and gave the Thai bigger loops at its terminals than you usually see. The long serifs on the Latin are there to balance them.
The terminals curve asymmetrically, and the foundry says that lets the family serve formal and casual work alike, best of all where a page wants an antique, historical air. The Thai vowels and tone marks were sized and placed with particular care, since they decide much of how readable a Thai line is and how even its texture looks.
The foundry adds a caution of its own. Some Thai letters sit close to each other in shape, ก, ถ, ภ, ฤ and ฦ form a group, บ and ป a pair, and in a very short text, a sign of 2 words, a reader could mix them up.
6 weights, Extra Light to Bold, with Vietnamese on the Latin side. For a Thai history book or a museum’s bilingual panels we’d set text in Regular and heads in Semi Bold.
