Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Urdu is normally written in Nastaliq, the hanging, sloping form of the Arabic script that took shape in Persia in the 15th century. It is highly cursive. Letters join into clusters that run at a slope, so a word steps down across the line where a Naskh word would sit flat, and none of it works without software that shapes the text properly.
This one comes from the Noto collection. Patrick Giasson drew it at Monotype, Kamal Mansour wrote the OpenType code, and Glenda Bellarosa was on the team too; Simon Cozens later updated it, and the current files run in 4 weights, Regular to Bold.
Our advice is to give it room between lines. Sloping clusters with dots above and below them take up more height than a flat script, and leading that suits a Latin paragraph looks cramped here. The script is also used for Persian, but this design was made with Urdu first in mind.
