Christian Thalmann made all of Cormorant himself at Catharsis Fonts in Zurich, every step from drawing and spacing through kerning and production. Claude Garamont’s legacy was the inspiration, though he worked from no single Garamond and drew most letters from scratch.
The wider family
Infant and Infant Italic are 2 of the 9 visual styles in the project, which also has Roman and Italic, Garamond and Garamond Italic, an Upright Cursive, Small Caps and Unicase, 45 font files in all. This download holds the Infant pair: 5 weights from Light to Bold, each with its italic.
The feature list is deep for a free family. Small caps with a caps to small caps switch, 10 stylistic sets, discretionary ligatures, a slashed zero and tabular figures all sit in it. Latin, Cyrillic and Vietnamese are covered.
Thalmann calls Cormorant a display family, and we agree with him. The lowercase is small, so give it room, a book title or a pull quote set large. Below about 14 px on a screen we would switch to something sturdier.
Google funded the libre release, with Dave Crossland thanked by name, and the family joined Google Fonts in January 2017.
