Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Count the people on the credits of Noto Serif KR and you get an idea of what a Korean serif takes. Sandoll Communications, with Soohyun Park, Yejin We and Donghoon Han, built the Hangul, from its elements up to whole syllables. Ryoko Nishizuka drew the kana and ideographs, Frank Grießhammer the Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, Wenlong Zhang the bopomofo. Ken Lunde at Adobe was project architect and defined the glyph set, with Masataka Hattori and Zachary Quinn Scheuren on production.

It belongs to Google’s Noto collection, which added it in August 2018, and it sets Korean in both its scripts, Hangul and Hanja. Hiragana, Katakana, Latin, Cyrillic and Greek come along as well. That makes 23,124 characters a file, in 8 upright weights from Extra Light to Black.

A font that size is heavy to send to a browser whole. Subset it, or serve the Korean ranges on demand, before you worry about anything else.

Light and Regular for reading. From Bold upward it is headline material, and the Black makes a dense, dark Hangul title.
