Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

The damage in this grade comes from fax machines and photocopiers. When MCKL and Forest Young worked out how Redaction should decay, they gathered legal documents that had been sent and copied until the letters went bitmapped and bloated, and grade 50 sits in the middle of that slide, after 10, 20 and 35 and before 70 and 100.
Underneath it is the same serif as every grade. Jeremy Mickel’s first aim was a face that held 2 legal standards at once, Times New Roman, the habit of most American court papers, and New Century Schoolbook, which the Supreme Court requires. The artists Titus Kaphar and Reginald Dwayne Betts commissioned it for The Redaction at MoMA PS1.
What makes the decay look digital? Negative shapes cut into the letters, a pixel-style detail, a square dot on the i and a square period. The essay on MCKL’s site calls the method an inktrap logic, the same notches a type designer would cut to keep ink from clogging a joint, used here to mimic damage.
Regular, Italic and Bold, with no bold italic. 346 characters, Latin with most European accents.
At this grade we would stop setting paragraphs and keep to display sizes, a poster headline or a cover. Small, the damage stops reading as a choice.
