Headings, labels and running text.

Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Hardware, Feed and Seed Co.

American jobbing type of the 18th and 19th centuries is the stock Arbutus Slab comes from. Karolina Lach drew it for Sorkin Type in 2012, the year after her Arbutus, whose faceted, spiky slabs came from wood type. The Slab is a sturdy companion to it.

Contrast is medium and the spacing generous, so it sets a little wider than Georgia and holds up at fairly small sizes, further down than you would expect from a display-leaning slab. A paragraph of it on a product page reads fine.

1 Regular, Latin and Latin Extended. We would use it for a farm shop label or a community notice board poster, where the old-time printing flavor fits.
