Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Kaisei is the umbrella name for 4 Japanese families that Font-Kai, the studio of type designer Kazuo Kanai, put on Google Fonts: Opti, Decol, HarunoUmi and Tokumin. Opti is the modern-style member of the set, and its makers say a page of it comes across cheerful and breezy. For titles above it they point to Decol, the sibling with little dots on its stroke ends.
There are 3 weights, Regular, Medium and Bold, and each file holds 7,930 characters. Nearly all of that is kana and kanji. Latin, Latin Extended and Cyrillic come along for the foreign names and words that turn up in a Japanese paragraph.
Google added it in May 2021.
On a magazine spread we would reach for Medium first. Going from Regular straight to Bold is a long step in a family this small, and Medium fills the gap.
