Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

A document written in Georgia can be opened in Gelasio and every line breaks in the same place. That was the brief. Eben Sorkin made the Regular, Bold, Italic and Bold Italic match Georgia’s metrics, so the advance widths line up and a layout built around 1 font survives the switch to the other. That counts on any system where Georgia is missing.

The letters themselves are his own. He started from an original printed sample of a French transitional type, a descendant of the Romain du Roi introduced in 1702, and that lineage shows in a certain planned, rational quality. Sorkin rounded the terminals, which warms it up, and there is the odd flourish, more of them in the italics.

Medium and Semi Bold were added between the 2 Georgia weights, each with its italic, for 8 styles in all.

Language coverage grew in a June 2022 update, and in March 2024 the African Latin set was improved with better diacritics, along with fixes to currency symbols and other details. In the font you also find:

  • old style and lining figures, tabular or proportional, plus a slashed zero
  • fractions and superscripts

For a long article on the web we would pick it over Georgia for the Medium and Semi Bold, which give headings a step between Regular and Bold.
