Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Hepta Slab goes back to the antique genre types of the Bruce and Co. foundry, mostly one called Antique 307, which Mike LaGattuta worked from specimens. This one is wide: set a sentence in Hepta Slab Regular and it runs about 25% longer than in Georgia. The extra width is part of the look. It also means fewer words to a line, so give text columns some room.

LaGattuta built it through spring 2018 and paid attention to the figures. The old style numerals are half-ranging, sitting between lining height and full old style, a compromise that keeps dates and prices from bouncing in a line of text. The 1, 2 and 7 have stylistic alternates, and there are discretionary ligatures for Th, ch, ct and st if you want a period flavor.

Weights

9 of them, Thin to Black. The ends are display weights, Thin for very large type and Black for posters, and the middle of the range is meant for text. A Regular or Medium paragraph under a Black headline is the obvious combination, and it works.

Small caps, tabular figures, fractions and a slashed zero round out the feature list, with Vietnamese in the character set.
