Florian Karsten built Montagu Slab with an optical size axis that does far more than scale. Slide it one way and the x-height rises, the spacing opens, the contrast drops and the apertures widen, which gives a sturdy slab for long text. Slide it the other way and everything tightens: high contrast, close spacing and tails that turn up sharply at the ends, a display cut in the manner of the 19th century slabs that Karsten took his cue from.
The download on this page is the static set, 7 weights from Thin at 100 to Bold at 700, no italics, so the optical size has been fixed for you and the variable range stays with the variable font. Even so the family sets wide, and it reads as a headline face first.
Does it need extras? Not many are there: a slashed zero, fractions, superscripts and subscripts, standard ligatures. We would use the Thin and Extra Light only at poster sizes, where their hairlines stay visible, and let Medium and Semi Bold take the magazine headlines.
