Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Rain on the old temple roof
58,064 characters sit in the single Regular of Cactus Classical Serif, and nearly all of that weight is Chinese. The font follows the Inherited Glyphs standard kept by the I.Font Project, plus other inherited forms in common use, and the result is a Chinese typeface whose characters keep their traditional shapes.
Who made which part
Tian Haidong produced the font, with Moonlit Owen helping on production and now maintaining it. The CJK characters started as glyphs Henry Chan prepared on GlyphWiki, and Tian Haidong modified them and filled in what was missing. The Latin, the kana and the other symbols were taken from Genyo Font, which But Ko built from Source Han Serif. It arrived on Google Fonts in 2024.
That borrowed Latin is better equipped than you might guess for a Chinese font, with small caps, old style figures, fractions and 3 stylistic sets, and Greek and Cyrillic come along as well, Bopomofo too.
For a classical text or a poetry anthology this is the one we would reach for. With only 1 weight, headings have to lean on size. On the web, subset it before you serve it, a file this full is heavy.
