Hentaigana are variant kana, older alternative shapes for the same Japanese syllables, and they live in a Unicode block of their own, the Kana Supplement. Without a font that covers it, a transcription of an old document has nowhere to put them.
Kazuhiro Yamada of nipponia drew it. It supports 515 characters across 9 Unicode blocks, most of them Latin and its accents for transliterations and notes, with the Kana Supplement as the reason the font exists. Google added it in February 2024.
There are 8 weights, Extra Light to Black, all upright. A scholar transcribing an old letter, or a museum writing a label for a scroll, would use it for the variant kana and pair it with a regular Japanese text face for everything else.
