Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Ana Sanfelippo wanted a calligraphic face that children could read for page after page. Almendra comes from the chancery and gothic hands, and the problem she set herself was to make the dark, broken forms of those hands sit with the clear legibility a young reader’s book needs.
At small sizes its black and white shapes knit into an even texture. Blow it up and its many details come out. The italic is much narrower than the roman, about 11% across a line, so it fits a lot into a caption or a spoken aside in a story.
There are 4 styles, Regular and Bold with their italics, and sister families for small caps and display. Almendra was shown at the Bienal Iberoamericana de Diseño in 2010 and appeared in the German editorial project Typodarium 2012.
