Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Transcribing a medieval manuscript calls for characters that ordinary fonts leave out. The Medieval Unicode Font Initiative, MUFI, publishes recommendations for those characters, and Caudex covers most of its version 3.0 recommendations.

It began much smaller. Nidud made the first version in the late 1990s with only the ISO 8859-1 character set, to print some old handwritten texts. It grew from there in FontForge, as an open project on SourceForge, to more than 2,000 glyphs, Greek and the Runic block included.

4 styles, roman and italic in 2 weights. A scholarly edition with runes quoted in place would be a fitting job for it.
