A Page In Suranna

Headings, labels and running text.

Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Morning edition, Vijayawada desk

This Telugu typeface carries the name of Suranna, who served as a poet under King Krishnadevaraya and was counted among the Astadiggajalu, the 8 legends gathered at his court.

Purushoth Kumar Guttula designed the Telugu in 2013 with newspapers in mind, and Silicon Andhra released it. Its look is set by where the weight falls: heavy at the bottom of the letters, lighter above, which gives a line of Telugu a firm footing on the page. Many conjuncts are drawn as their own glyphs.

The Latin is borrowed. It comes from Prata, published by Cyreal, a foundry in Moscow. The project is run from Hyderabad by the type designer Appaji Ambarisha Darbha.

1 style, no bold. A news site would use it for headlines and body alike and lean on size for hierarchy.
