Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Podkova means horseshoe in Russian. It is a slab serif, monoline, so the strokes keep 1 even thickness, and the ends are cut on a diagonal, a detail you notice at headline size and hardly at all in a paragraph.
Ilya Yudin drew it first in 2010. In January 2017 Alexei Vanyashin refined it and spread it across more weights, and in the process the Bold came out a little lighter than before. 2 years later, in September 2019, the family became a variable font, and the download here holds 5 static weights cut from that, Regular to Extra Bold.
Can a slab with odd letters work as text? The wide proportions and plain detailing are there to make small sizes legible, and Cyreal pitched it for display use as well because the unusual letterforms give it enough character. We’d try it on a restaurant site, Regular for the menu items and Extra Bold for the section names, and the Cyrillic and Vietnamese support would let the same menu run in more than 1 language.
