Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Hiragana and the Latin letters are drawn slightly lighter; katakana and kanji slightly heavier. That uneven weight is on purpose, and in a block of mixed Japanese it sets up a rhythm, a gentle back and forth between the lighter hiragana and the denser characters around them.
Yoshimichi Ohira built Zen Antique around 2 kinds of antique-style Japanese with kanji, and Zen Antique Soft is the same design with slightly rounded corners. This one keeps the corners sharp. Both belong to his Zen Fonts collection, the largest group of Japanese families on Google Fonts, and both arrived in October 2021.
7,815 characters, 1 Regular. Greek and Cyrillic are included alongside the kana, kanji and Latin.
For a novel’s cover or a section heading in a Japanese magazine it has a lot of flavor. We would not run a long article in it on screen, where the weight shifts start to look like noise at small sizes.
