Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

JM Solé drew the capitals of Noticia Text small on purpose, small enough that you can set a word in caps and use it where you’d otherwise want small caps. He suggests adding a little tracking when you do. For a font with no small caps feature in it, that is a handy way around the gap.

The job was running text in digital newspapers, on websites and in phone apps, and it had to stay clear at small sizes on low resolution screens. So the lowercase is big, the proportions generous, the serifs heavy slabs and the apertures wide open. Look closely at the round letters at a large size and you see the inner curves break where they meet the stems. That reasoning goes by the name of W. A. Dwiggins’ M-formula: straighten the stem, cut the curve, and the counter stays open at small sizes even if the letter looks odd blown up.

The 2 italics are true italics, built to contrast with the roman while keeping big counters and simple curves, and all 4 styles were hinted by hand for Windows.

Solé planned Noticia as a much larger project of 18 styles, with condensed, display and sans versions. This text cut is what Google Fonts has carried since 2012. We would use it for an article page or a long blog post, where its sturdy, slightly blunt slabs hold up at ordinary reading sizes.
