Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

James Puckett made Rhodium Libre coarse on purpose. Fine details vanish on a screen at small sizes anyway, so he left them out, which kept the shapes simple and the font small enough to load quickly on the web. The letters run a little wide with open counters, and the Latin lowercase is big.
That big lowercase created a problem for the Devanagari. How do you set it beside oversized Latin x-heights without it looking shrunken? Puckett’s answer was to draw the Devanagari to the height of the Latin capitals, so the 2 scripts stand level on a line. It covers contemporary Hindi, Marathi and Nepali, and the Latin follows Adobe’s Latin-3 set.
His models were old: Fortune, also sold as Volta, by Konrad Bauer and Walter Baum, and Intertype’s Rex. For the hard part, type that survives small sizes and poor reading conditions, he looked at Matthew Carter’s Verdana.
