Headings, labels and running text.

Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

The poem ends where it began

The stems in Esteban swell and thin as they go, and that movement was taken from the manuscripts of Jorge Alfredo Díaz Esteban, a writer whose pen made a wider stroke the harder it was pressed. Angélica Díaz turned that pressure into a font, which shares his name.

Díaz meant it for literature and poetry. The x-height is tall, the letters moderately compressed so a line holds a fair number of words, the contrast medium and the serifs sturdy. How much contrast was settled by trial: Díaz set text at different densities, different “colors” of gray on the page, until it held up in cheap printing as well as on screen as a web font.

We like it for a small-press poetry book or a literary blog. There is only 1 style, so italics for titles and emphasis would have to come from somewhere else.

On Google Fonts since January 2012.
