Domine was tested at 14 and 16 px from the first sketches, and you can see the decisions that came out of it in the letters:
- the round letters, b, c, d, e, o, p and q, are a little squarish on the inside, which opens the counters for rendering
- serifs are shorter than usual, leaving more air between each pair of letters
- where the stems meet the branches in h, m and n, the joins are cut deep so no dark spots form at small sizes
- the spacing is looser than a print face would get
Underneath, it borrows from faces that have been in use for more than 100 years, Clarendon, Century, Cheltenham and Clearface. The lowercase a, with its curve springing from the bottom of the stem, recalls the last 2 of those, and the same soft curve comes back in f, j, m, n and r.
Pablo Impallari, Rodrigo Fuenzalida and Brenda Gallo aimed it at newspaper and magazine websites, where the text is the whole point, and they say it holds up as small as 11 px. 4 weights run from Regular to Bold. No italics, and that is the 1 thing we would hold against it for long articles.
