Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Google Play Books needed a typeface of its own, and Literata was it. TypeTogether drew the first version as that brand face, and by the third it had grown into a whole reading family, headlines and captions included, redrawn from the ground up as a variable font. It exists in 2 builds, one for ebooks and one for print, and the files on this page belong to the print build.
The work was split by script. Veronika Burian and José Scaglione drew the Latin, Irene Vlachou the Greek, and Vera Evstafieva and Elena Novoselova the Cyrillic. In 2021 the family took gold at the Indigo Awards and was a Modern Cyrillic winner the same year.
16 styles, Extra Light to Black, each with its italic. The italics run noticeably narrower than the romans, about 6.5% over a line of text, so an italic sentence gives back some room.
Small caps, a feature that turns capitals into small caps, old style and lining figures, discretionary ligatures and 2 stylistic sets are all in the 1,163 characters, which also reach Vietnamese. The typesetting kit is complete, as it should be for a book face.
Would we set a novel in it? Yes, in Regular, around 18 px on a screen or 10 pt on paper. Keep the Black for the cover.
