Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

What do you do when you need to emphasize something inside a passage that is already in italic? Brian Zick’s answer for Neuton was to plan 2 italics, 1 called “italic” and another called “cursive”, so a roman could have more than 1 companion. A sober modern italic can feel wrong in a personal or classical document, he argued, and a fancy one looks silly in an essay.

The roman he built for that plan is dark and clean, somewhat Dutch in feeling, and it will remind some readers of Times. The lowercase is large with short ascenders and descenders, and the letters are compact, so a column holds a lot of words. Next to Georgia, a line of Neuton comes out about 16% shorter.

Here you get 5 weights, Extra Light to Extra Bold, plus 1 italic at Regular. Small caps and old style figures are built in.

We like it for a dense newsletter or a book with long footnotes, where space is tight and the page should still look dark and even.
