Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Chapter 1, the river town
The modern form of Devanagari took shape in the 7th century, out of a Brahmic script that dates back to the 1st century CE. Today it carries 14 vowels and 33 consonants, and Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit are among the more than 120 languages written with it.
Noto Serif Devanagari is the modulated design for it in Google’s Noto collection, with real contrast between thick and thin strokes. Universal Thirst and Indian Type Foundry drew it together with Monotype’s team. The coverage runs past the main block into Vedic Extensions and Devanagari Extended, and the common Indic number forms are in there too.
9 weights, Thin to Black. We would choose it for printed Hindi books and long articles, set in the Regular, and give the extremes to headlines.
