A Page In Rasa

Headings, labels and running text.

Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

2 existing typefaces were taken apart to make Rasa, on purpose, as an experiment in remixing. The Latin started from Eben Sorkin’s Merriweather. The Gujarati started from Skolar Gujarati, which David Březina had drawn earlier. Anna Giedryś and Březina then reworked both until they could share a page, and the Latin in Rasa is allowed to bend where the Gujarati needs it to.

The goal was continuous reading on the web, long articles in online news and magazines. So the Gujarati side handles a wide range of basic and compound syllables, enough for Gujarati and Kachchi, and the Latin covers more than 92 languages. If you only need the Latin, the same project ships it separately as Yrsa, which has slightly fewer glyphs.

5 weights, Light to Bold, each with an italic, came to Google Fonts in June 2016. The Latin is narrower than Georgia by a fair margin, and the italics are tighter again, so a quoted sentence in italic takes up clearly less room than its roman neighbors.

  • For figures there are lining, tabular and proportional sets plus a slashed zero, and 3 stylistic sets hold the alternates.

We would use it the way it was planned, as the reading face of a Gujarati news site or a bilingual magazine, at 18 px or so with comfortable leading, and let a bolder sans handle the headlines.
