Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Sahitya is Alegreya’s Devanagari. Juan Pablo del Peral, who drew the Latin Alegreya fonts, led the design of a Devanagari to match their style and feel, working on it with Sol Matas, and the Latin here is his own.

The question with a font like this is whether the 2 scripts will look like relatives on a page. Here the Devanagari was drawn from the start to share the style of the Latin beside it. Erin McLaughlin, Vaishnavi Murthy, Noopur Datye, Dan Reynolds and José Nicolás Silva gave feedback along the way.

It is small, Regular and Bold only, but has the reading features you’d want in a book: old style and tabular figures, fractions, ligatures. A Hindi novel or a bilingual anthology would suit it.
