Pridi means “joyful” in Thai, and the Thai half is where most of the design thinking went.

The Latin is a slab serif. The Thai has no slabs added to it at all. Cadson Demak’s Katatrad team kept the loops at the start of the Thai strokes and worked out the terminals with ideas taken from loopless Thai, and that is how the 2 scripts get along on the same line without the Thai being dressed up to look Latin.

Informal looped Thai carries slightly simpler details than the formal kind, and the team says that is what let them extend it into heavier weights. So the family runs to 6 of them, Extra Light to Bold. They also suggest that their handling of thick and thin strokes in the Thai could serve other Thai type designers as a reference, which is an unusual thing for a foundry to write about its own font.

A caution comes from the makers themselves. Several Thai letters look alike in Pridi, ก ถ ภ ฤ ฦ in 1 group, บ and ป, ข and ช, and in a very short text such as a 1 word label a reader could mix them up. Give it a magazine column or a block of advertising copy and the context does the sorting.
