Tea estates above Kandy
Sinhala comes first in Maname, and the Latin follows its lead. Pathum Egodawatta gave the Sinhala a quirky stroke modulation, thick and thin falling in places you might not predict, and then drew the Latin letters to take their contrast from it. The 2 scripts end up sharing a pulse, which is the reason to choose this over a Sinhala font bolted onto an unrelated Latin.
It began in 2016 as Egodawatta’s master’s project in typeface design at the University of Reading, planned as a big superfamily across several styles and scripts. What reached Google Fonts in June 2024, through the studio Mooniak, is a selection from it: the Sinhala now complete, the Latin widened to cover more languages including Vietnamese.
