Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Inria is a national institute for digital research, and when it asked Black Foundry for type it wanted 4 values in the letters: humanity, technology, excellence and creativity. The designers, Grégori Vincens and Jérémie Hornus, split that brief across a pair of families, giving the sans the humanist and openly contemporary side and keeping this serif more rational.
You can see that in the text. It is calm and orderly, a serif you would trust with a paper full of footnotes and tables, and the feature list backs that up: old style and lining figures, tabular and proportional spacing for them, subscripts and superscripts for formulas, fractions, and 2 stylistic sets.
3 weights, Light, Regular and Bold, each with a matching italic.
Would we use it for something other than an institute? Yes, for a report or a long blog post where the sans and the serif can share the job, Inria Sans on the headings and this one underneath.
