Eduardo Tunni gave the Mate italic some unusual shapes for an italic, with calligraphic traces in the way its strokes shade from thick to thin, and across a run of words it comes out close to 9% narrower than the roman. An italic phrase dropped into a roman line takes up less room, a help in fiction where emphasis turns up on every page.
The roman is the plainer half. Its counters are open and cut sharp, and a page of it settles at a medium gray, the texture Tunni wanted for relaxed reading line after line. Text was the main purpose, but the letter details hold up when enlarged too, so a book jacket title is fair game. The figures are drawn at a medium height in both styles.
Give it essays and novels, and keep it off dense forms and tables.
Google Fonts has listed Mate since November 2011, and a February 2023 update widened the character set and added fractions. The small caps companion Tunni describes is not among the 2 styles here.
