Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

A sermon set in the old shop

Around 1760 Jacques François Rosart cut a type for the Enschedé printing house, shown as no. 811 in its specimen, and this font goes back to that sheet. Manvel Shmavonyan and Alexei Vanyashin did the revival for Cyreal in 2011.

They did not keep it frozen. The x-height was raised a good deal over the original and the contrast was lowered, to give an even color on a web page and keep the letters readable at medium and small sizes, while the historic oddities of Rosart’s shapes stayed in. Old style figures came along too.

1 Regular style, basic Latin. A sister font, Jacques Francois Shadow, carries an incised version of the letters.
