Headings, labels and running text.

Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Turf smoke and a wet road

Look inside the curves of Donegal One, where a bowl meets its stem, and the inner line is cut, angled off where you would expect a smooth turn. That cut interior curve is associated with W.A. Dwiggins, the American who drew Electra and Caledonia for Linotype, and it gives Gary Lonergan’s serif a crisp, slightly carved feel.

The face was made for reading on screens, comfortably and for a long stretch, and Sorkin Type says it keeps its personality from small text sizes up to display. It sets fairly wide, which helps at small sizes on a phone.

Lonergan had drawn Headland One for the same foundry earlier in 2012. Donegal One followed in November, 1 Regular style for Latin and Latin Extended. With no italic or bold, it suits a blog or an essay where emphasis is rare.
