Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Of the Antiquities of Oxford
2 little pointing hands, ☜ and ☞, sit at the back of the character set, next to fractions in thirds and eighths. Small finds. They do tell you this is a digitized piece of 17th century printing stock and that Igino Marini kept the oddments with it.
The type behind it is the Pica roman Peter De Walpergen cut for Oxford, and the DW in the name is him. It arrived in 1692, 6 years after John Fell died and left his whole collection of punches, matrices and molds to the university with instructions to keep it together. So this size was a late addition to the Fell Types, made by Fell’s own type-founder after Fell himself was gone.
Marini’s notes ask for 12.5 points when you print it, to match the original size. In this SC version every lowercase key brings up a small capital, and we would put it on the first words of a chapter or an author’s name in running text, where small caps have always gone.
