Monsoon letters to my sister
Width 93, angle -55, roundness 35. Those are the settings Eben Sorkin gave the Expand Path brush in FontLab Studio 5 when he drew Asar, and the brush did most of the shaping: every letter is that stroke run along a heart line, the skeleton of the letter, with manual fixes only where the automatic result was not good enough.
The skeletons came from Pria Ravichandran’s Palanquin. Asar starts from that family’s proportions, heart lines, glyph set and OpenType features, and then the density of the brush strokes pushed the spacing wider and called for new forms, until it had a face of its own.
Sorkin Type, a foundry based in Boston, meant it for long texts that keep some charm when set large. 1 Regular style in Devanagari and Latin, with stylistic alternates and fractions. We would try it on a bilingual book of poems, title page to the last line.
