Before Gentium Plus there were 2 reduced families, Gentium Basic and Gentium Book Basic, and they covered a limited range of Latin, with none of the Cyrillic or Greek. Gentium Plus is SIL International’s answer, the same design carried out to the full character set, 2,783 characters in this release.
That reach is the whole point of the family, which covers:
- Latin with the extended letters
- Vietnamese
- Cyrillic, extended range included
- Greek, both modern and ancient
The italic is its own thing. It runs a little over 10% narrower than the roman across the same words, which makes it handy for glosses and examples tucked into a line of linguistic description, without stretching the line. Bold and Bold Italic complete the 4 styles here. There are small caps, a caps to small caps feature and 6 stylistic sets.
A sister family, Gentium Book Plus, has the same shapes in a slightly darker weight, and you might reach for it when a book is printed on soft paper or set on screen at small sizes. The 2022 release improved the Windows hinting a good deal as well.
