Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Watch the kana. In Kaisei HarunoUmi they are drawn with a soft, wavy line that looks closer to a hand than a machine, and the katakana are cut a little smaller than the rest, a habit borrowed from older Japanese typesetting that gives the page a gentler texture. Font-Kai, the studio of Kazuo Kanai (金井和夫), made it as 1 member of the Kaisei family, and Google added it in May 2021.
Their own advice is to set it at text size. We agree with them; the waviness that reads as friendly in a paragraph turns fussy when blown up on a poster.
3 weights, Regular, Medium and Bold, with Latin, Greek and Cyrillic alongside the kanji. The Latin is broad, so an English word dropped into a Japanese sentence does not look starved next to its neighbors.
