Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Work on this font goes back to 1994. SIL has been refining its Scheherazade Naskh for 3 decades, and the New version is the current state of that work: a traditional, book-like Naskh, named after the heroine of the Arabian Nights, that supports every Arabic-script character defined in Unicode 14.0.

That last part is the reason to pick it. The extended letters used by languages beyond Arabic itself are present, hundreds of them, with the shaping to join them. The glyph set grew again in May 2022.

For a long time the family had only Regular and Bold. In April 2023 SIL added Medium and Semi Bold, so there are now 4, which helps when a heading needs a step up from the text without jumping all the way to Bold. Basic Latin comes along for mixed passages.

We would give it plenty of line spacing. The vowel marks of a fully pointed text stack above and below the letters, and Naskh this traditional looks cramped without room around it.
