Faxed, copied, faxed again: the legal papers Forest Young and Jeremy Mickel studied for this typeface were full of letters gone bitmapped, bloated and warped, and that decay became the 7 grades of Redaction.

Grade 35 is where the grid gets coarse enough to change shapes. The bowl of a g and the round of an e turn blocky once the type is big, though a short paragraph at reading size still holds together.

Where it came from

Titus Kaphar and Reginald Dwayne Betts built their exhibition The Redaction at MoMA PS1 from legal claims filed by the Civil Rights Corps for people held in jail over court fines and fees they could not afford. Betts wrote poems by redacting those claims, and Kaphar painted the people in them.

Regular, Italic and Bold, 346 characters each, Latin with Western European accents.

We would keep this grade for display, a poster or an exhibition wall, where the coarseness reads as a decision.
