Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Danfo buses in Lagos carry their lettering as cut-out vinyl stickers, and a letter cut from a sheet of vinyl ends up with corners and curves of its own. Afrotype went to the source. They worked with Abu, a lettering artist at Ojota Bus Stop, and built this font from that cut-out style.
It was Afrotype’s first project, a 2018 design reworked and released through Google Fonts in March 2024, and the rework was mostly about reach: the character set now covers all the Latin-script languages of Sub-Saharan Africa, Vietnamese too. The credits name Seyi Olusanya, Eyiyemi Adegbite, David Udoh and Mirko Velimirović.
Danfo is a wide, heavy display serif, 1 style here, though the team describes it as the base of a larger family still to come. Under the hood it has more than a display face usually bothers with, 3 stylistic sets, a slashed zero, old style and lining figures.
Try it on a shop sign or an album cover, and go through the stylistic sets 1 at a time; some words look better in 1 than another.
