Noto Serif Tamil has italics, 9 of them, 1 for every weight from Thin to Black. Indian Type Foundry and Tom Grace drew it with the Monotype Design Team as the modulated, serif member of Google’s Noto Tamil fonts.
Tamil is an abugida with 18 consonants and 12 vowels, a modest set for a Brahmic script, written left to right by around 70 million people in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and Mauritius. It also carries smaller languages such as Badaga and Saurashtra. Like other Indic scripts it needs software that handles complex text shaping.
A Latin set is included, so English words in a Tamil paragraph stay in the same family.
I would use the Regular and Medium for running text in a book or a news site and keep the Thin and Extra Light for display. And try the italic for emphasis inside a paragraph, a job usually left to bold.
