Notes From The Reading Room

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

By grade 100 a lowercase g has turned into a short stack of square blocks. This is the far end of Redaction, last in the official order of grades, after 10, 20, 35, 50 and 70.
The bitmap grades were in the plan from the start. The typeface was commissioned by the artists Titus Kaphar and Reginald Dwayne Betts for The Redaction at MoMA PS1, a show built on legal documents about people jailed for unpaid court fines and fees, and the team wanted the font to decay the way such documents do as they are copied again and again through the legal process.
Jeremy Mickel at MCKL, working with Forest Young, looked back at early bitmap type for this end of the scale. Susan Kare’s first Apple designs and Zuzana Licko’s low-resolution fonts for Emigre are both named as references, and so is Peter Saville’s cover for New Order’s Power, Corruption & Lies.
Even the clean grades carry hints of it, a square dot on the i, a square period.
Regular, Italic and Bold. Set it big. Below headline size the pixels close up and you lose the words, which for a title about erasure might be the point, and for anything else is a problem.
