Notes From The Reading Room

The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.

A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

In 1780 the printer Joaquín Ibarra produced an edition of Don Quixote for the Real Academia de la Lengua, and the types it was set in had been cut by Gerónimo Gil. Ibarra Real Nova brings those letters back.

The revival started in 2007, when the Calcografía Nacional Española set up a project, directed by José María Ribagorda, to make better known the type heritage that Spain’s Imprenta Real produced in the 18th century. Recovering Gil’s Quixote types was part of it, and the result was called Ibarra Real. In 2015 Ribagorda brought in Octavio Pardo as the first collaborator on the design; Pardo was also the first student on the University of Reading’s MA Typeface Design to study the project.

What you get now:

  • 4 weights, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold, each with an italic, 8 styles
  • small caps, old style figures, discretionary ligatures and fractions
  • 375 characters, Latin with the extended accents

The project also has ornaments by Spanish and Latin American designers, held back from this release until their authors agree to share them openly.

The italics run noticeably narrower than the romans. It would be our first pick for a Spanish novel or a poetry chapbook.
